Instructional Format And Segment Length In Interactive Video Programs

An experiment is reported in which subjects worked with an interactive videodisk program about cheese making on the basis of the same set of instructional objectives but in different experimental conditions with respect to learner control. The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between learnercontrolled or program-controlled length of video segments and test performance on post-tests and retention tests. Also, differences between self-chosen and program-controlled segment length regarding the investment of mental effort of subjects were examined. The results show that long program-controlled video segments have some advantage over interactive video when learning factual information. However, welldesigned interactive video applications may offer a comfortable work environment that allows for a relaxed use of mental effort. The results of the experiment seem to suggest that video segments with a length of about 3 minutes, containing enough factual information for answering 8 or 9 questions, may appear to be optimal building blocks. Subsequent experiments should reveal to what extent this suggestion is valid.
